Financial guarantor for studying in Belgium: required amount and sponsorship calculation

For the 2026-2027 academic year, a student from outside the European Union who plans to study in Belgium must prove sufficient means of subsistence. The amount published by the Belgian Immigration Office is €1,062 net per month.

Minimum amount for the student

€1,062 × 12 months = €12,744 net for the academic year. This covers the student’s means of subsistence and does not automatically include tuition, travel, insurance, visa fees or any accommodation already paid.

How much must the guarantor have?

For an Annex 32 sponsorship undertaking, the guarantor must show sufficient regular income for both the guarantor and the student:

• Guarantor’s own means: €2,173.88 net per month;
• Student’s required means: €1,062 net per month;
• Total: €3,235.88 net per month;
• Annual calculation: €3,235.88 × 12 = €38,830.56 net.

This is a regular net-income threshold, not merely a temporary bank balance. The competent authority may check income, family situation, financial charges and the regularity of the resources.

Documents and safeguards

The file generally includes the official Annex 32, the guarantor’s identity and residence documents, regular income evidence, bank or tax documents where requested, and the student’s passport and admission documents. Foreign documents may need authentication, legalisation and translation.

The sponsorship undertaking does not replace admission, insurance, accommodation, tuition payment or other visa requirements, and it does not guarantee visa approval.
