How to be hosted during your studies in France: certificate and steps

Staying with a relative, friend or host family can reduce a student’s initial budget. The file must clearly distinguish the address, the document proving it and the other visa or residence requirements.

What is an accommodation certificate?

It is a signed declaration from the host confirming that the student will stay at a specific address. It normally includes both identities, the complete address and the expected start date. It is not a lease and does not by itself prove financial resources.

Host documents

1. Dated and signed certificate.
2. Identity document.
3. Recent proof of address.
4. Proof of lawful occupation when requested.
5. Expected duration and hosting conditions.

Student documents

• Passport and admission or enrolment proof.
• The same complete address on every form.
• Insurance and financial evidence where required.
• Any additional documents listed by France-Visas or the consulate.
